Desk to dinner: a jacket that does not look like costume tailoring

September is when calendars fill with indoor evenings again. The activity is a sport coat or knit polo you can wear after 6 p.m. without changing at the gym.

Labor Day is the unofficial start of people remembering restaurants have dress codes. You do not need a full suit. You need one jacket or a dense knit polo that reads finished under office light. That is the September tailoring activity — not wedding-guest navy, not a tux.

A Ludlow-class wool-linen sport coat on a deep markdown is the swing if the shoulders fit. If they do not, skip it; cheap tailoring that does not fit is more expensive than full price that does. A merino knit polo in charcoal does the same job for less courage. Both belong next to the oxford already in the still life, not next to a graphic tee.

I would wear either with the denim from the weekend note, not with matching suit trousers, unless the trousers actually fit. Affiliate links may appear when we point at a merchant.
